Unprecedented total will go to help school libraries and literacy projects

This year’s Times Colonist Book Sale raised an unprecedented $250,000, which will be used to help school libraries and literacy projects. We expect this year’s total to be a bit higher when we finish counting the money left by the 8,200 people who came through the Victoria Curling Club on Saturday and Sunday.

After a quarter of a century of Times Colonist book sales, we are not surprised that prime items were still there at the end. There are always so many books, it’s impossible for anyone to check them all.Proceeds from the sale go to school libraries — we usually double the book-buying budgets at many Island schools — and literacy organizations, the groups that are helping adults improve their reading skills.

The books that are unsold and unclaimed will be boxed up and sold, at a bulk rate, to a wholesaler in the United States. Those volunteers include some of the most inspiring people I have ever worked with. Their passion for their work is remarkable. They come from all walks of life, and each person has their own reasons for taking part.

Their support for the cause proves that a few hundred determined people can truly make a difference — in this case, by raising $250,000 that will be put to work in our community.
