The district says the two elementary schools are both around 60 years old and cannot keep up with growing education demands and increasing classroom sizes.
The Middletown Area School District says it’s in the final planning stages of building a primary school and plans to phase out two elementary schools that have “outlived their intended life cycles.”
Reid Elementary School will be converted to hold grades 4-5 and will act more like a middle school or high school rather than a single classroom where one teacher instructs all subjects. A new operations maintenance building – currently located at 100 Industrial Lane – will be built on the MAPS campus.Middletown Area Middle School and Middletown Area High School will have no building changes.
With the consolidation of the administration building, operations maintenance building, and the closure of the two elementary schools, the district will only have to manage five buildings instead of seven.
