The scammers call residents claiming they are the subject of a warrant issued by Judge Scott A. Evans, or another judge, and are to report to the sheriff’s office to pay a fine.
Caller ID will show that the call appears to originate from the actual telephone number of the Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office. However, these calls are not originating from the Sheriff’s Office and are a scam, similar to one that has previously been used in Dauphin County, the release said.
The scammers might instruct the victim to purchase Green Dot MoneyPak cards, or solicit another form of payment, to pay the fine and avoid going to jail. The Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that it never solicits or accepts money by telephone. Residents who receive one of these scam calls and answer the phone are recommended to inform the caller that they will call them back, and then hang up.
Residents who do not answer the phone and instead receive a voicemail with a similar message purporting to be from the Sheriff’s Office are advised not to return the call.
