Wages in real terms in Nottingham have fallen by a far greater margin than the UK average, new data has shown. Figures released by the Reach Data Unit highlighted that while real term wages fell across the country by 3.2% for the month of August, the drop was an alarming 4% in Nottingham.
The statistics were bleaker in south Nottinghamshire, too, where wages fell by 4.5%, compared to 3% in north Nottinghamshire. The figures mean only in Brighton and Hove did wages fall by a greater percentage Birmingham and Lincolnshire also saw a 4% drop. According to data from the Office for National Statistics the average person paid via PAYE earned £1,837 in August. That’s up from £1,834 in July and £1,738 in August 2021. However, wages have failed to keep up with the rate of inflation as the country struggles through the cost of living crisis.
TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said: “Every worker deserves a decent standard of living. But as the cost-of-living crisis intensifies, millions of families don’t know how they will make ends meet this winter. “The new prime minister must get pay rising. Boosting the minimum wage and giving public sector workers a decent pay rise would be a good start. And unions should be allowed to go into every workplace to negotiate proper pay rises for all working people."
