The museum is scheduled to open on July 1.

That may prove a good thing, since on the day of the provincial announcement, the board of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation was reported to have resigned over fallout from a $200,000 donation made in 2016 by Chinese businessman Zhang Bin.

But underscoring the troubled socio-political landscape that the museum is opening into is that around the same time as the provincial announcement, another group of Chinese Canadians were meeting with Marco Mendicino, the federal public safety minister. B.C. Senator Yuen Pau Woo has been one of the registry’s vocal critics. He drew a parallel between the registry and the Chinese Immigration Act, which is more commonly referred to by the name of the similar Chinese Exclusion Act of 1888.Article content

Deliberately enacted on Dominion Day — now Canada Day — some Chinese-Canadians refer to July 1 as “Humiliation Day”. Some choose not to celebrate the national holiday, including Henry Yu, a Vancouver-born UBC history professor and former museum director who is helping Clement prepare the exhibition. Yu, whose grandfather arrived just before the Exclusion Act came into effect, described the exhibition as “something that will have a really emotional impact” that may even be “triggering” to some people.Article content
