Danielle Smith, who spent years in the political wilderness, must now do what her predecessor could not: unite a party that has become increasingly divided

Ms. Smith took the stage and declared that her party was united, despite a narrow victory and a sometimes bruising and bitter campaign. She said her victory marked a “new chapter” in Alberta’s history as she repeated her promises to fight back against the federal government. Travis Toews, who served as finance minister under Mr. Kenney, placed second. She failed to win her own riding nomination as a Progressive Conservative in 2015. During the UCP leadership campaign, she acknowledged she made a mistake when she led the floor-crossing and insisted she had learned from those errors.

He announced his resignation after a leadership review in May left him with 51-per-cent support, which he said was not enough to continue leading the party.
