His franchise records for points are front and centre, but the Ottawa Senator to go into the Hockey Hall of Fame was a whole lot more.

“He’s the type of person who should be in the Hall because of his impact,” said former linemate Jason Spezza. “It’s well deserved, for what he did for the city of Ottawa, his longevity there and just the influence he had on and off the ice.

He, Sundin and Vancouver’s Mark Naslund were all captains of three Canadian franchises in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Alfredsson doing his part to change the tired narrative that Scandinavians lacked innate leadership. Defenceman Chris Phillips said Alfredsson inspired many younger Senators as the team morphed into contenders and 2007 Cup finalists. Yet few Sens recall him making big speeches.

“The fans certainly adored him,” Phillips said. “He came in with zero fanfare, no expectations, not a high draft pick, but he stole the hearts of everyone. There was also a lot of mirth along the way, as when the Ottawa media dubbed Alfredsson, Spezza and Danny Heatley the ‘Pizza Line’. An in-house promotion for a free slice was triggered every time Ottawa scored five goals in a game and the trio’s output immediately strained resources of the pie people.
