Dangerous Wildfire Conditions Expected in Plains

Abnormally warm, dry, and windy weather is creating dangerous wildfire conditions across the Plains. The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for a large region, including the Texas Panhandle. The largest fire in Texas history, the Smokehouse Creek Fire, is still burning in parts of the Panhandle. Several other fires have also been reported in the area.

A dangerous recipe for wildfire conditions will brew across the Plains on Monday and again midweek because of abnormally warm, dry and windy weather. The National Weather Service has placed a sprawling region from eastern Wyoming to eastern New Mexico, including the Texas Panhandle , under red flag warning s for a heightened fire threat. It comes as the Smokehouse Creek Fire, the largest on record in Texas, is still smoldering in parts of the Panhandle. Xcel Energy, a utility in Texas,, which was fanned by powerful winds. It has since burned 1,058,482 acres but was 87 percent contained as of Monday morning.
