Dogs are known to have a sweet tooth - but these treats could prove fatal
Savvy dog owners will be keeping their chocolatey treats well away from their beloved pets this Halloween - but there's one even more popular staple of the scary season that could cost you a steep vet bill.
Pumpkin pie fillings, blends, and mixes all often contain toxic substances like nutmeg and cinnamon, which can result in an emergency out-of-hours trip to the vet with an average cost of £200.READ MORE: Don't miss the latest Halloween events by joining our dedicated WhatsApp community "Pumpkin seeds, while edible, should be kept away from small dogs as they pose a choking hazard. Instead, vets recommend seeds be cleaned, peeled, roasted, and ground before being fed to a dog. Pumpkin skin can also be a choking hazard that risks gut obstruction if swallowed. So make sure this is removed before feeding.
Another ingredient which can be potentially fatal to dogs if ingested is xylitol, also known as sugar alcohol, a type of sweetener which can be found in some baked goods, nut butters, and sugar-free sweets.
