Opinion: New council members were in a jovial mood for their first meeting. But they know tough debates are coming soon.
They then proceeded to breeze through their first meeting, with a series of unanimous votes and little acrimony. There were exactly zero instances on Tuesday of councillors exclaiming “point of procedure” or “point of privilege,” the kinds of exchanges that sometimes derailed council meetings for hours during the previous term.
Wednesday’s council agenda includes four motions introduced by the second-term ABC councillors, with more than 100 members of the public registered to address council on matters ranging from municipal issues of huge public interest, such as policing, to a controversial international debate around the definition of antisemitism.
It is not the only big debate on the docket. While the adoption of IHRA’s definition of antisemitism was included in the 94-point platform ABC released during the campaign, it did not garner anywhere near as much coverage and debate as the party’s pledge to hire 100 additional police officers and 100 mental health nurses, which is also on Wednesday’s agenda.
Second-term OneCity Coun. Christine Boyle indicated she plans to introduce a motion aimed at enabling non-market and co-op housing.
