Vancouver, which has a median yearly household income of about $72,000, struggles to meet its own targets for rental housing production for middle-income families.

Pretty much everyone agrees that Vancouver needs more rental housing. But there remains a lively debate over the most effective — and fair — way to get those homes built.

Vancouver, which has a median yearly household income of about $72,000, struggles to meet its targets for rental housing for middle-income families. Much more rental housing was built in Vancouver in the second half of the decade that previous mayor Gregor Robertson and his Vision Vancouver party were in power compared with their first five years. City stats show between 2008 and 2012, Vancouver averaged only 515 rental housing unit starts each year. Between 2013 and 2017, the city averaged 1,562 rental housing starts a year.

LandlordBC has recently completed a policy paper that will be sent to the provincial Housing Ministry and made public later this week. “The exemption would be guaranteed for a minimum of 20 years,” the report says. “More secure market rental housing supply is the real solution to stabilizing rents, not rent control.”
