Agricultural fallout could far surpass the immediate destruction caused by the Nova Kakhovka dam attack 🔴 Grain fields in Ukraine “may turn into deserts as early as next year” and damage to the reservoir could affect global food supplies

Prior to the dam collapsing, the reservoir was a main source of irrigation for wheat fields in the southern region, and the full consequences for the mostly agricultural area have become clearer.

Ukraine is one of the word’s top grain producers, and accounts for 35 per cent of the world’s sunflower oil, 40 per cent of sunflower meal, and 5 per cent of all corn, wheat and barley exports. Lyubov Buryi, 67, who was evacuated from Kherson to a hospital on Tuesday with her 40-year-old son, Roman, said: “I can’t even speak now, I can’t collect myself. I’m of course awfully angry at [the Russians], I can’t even describe it… I don’t know what awaits us, our house seems to be destroyed.”

The chief doctor of a Kherson hospital, who asked not to be named because he did not want the hospital to risk retribution, said 136 people had been admitted for treatment because of the flooding. Many were elderly. “They just don’t understand what kind of pain it is, when your childhood home goes underwater,” she said. “There are animals and elderly people there. I hope they are rescued quickly.”
