Dallas Stars break through the Wild in dominant win over Central Division foe
nor the Wild found the back of the net in the first period of Wednesday’s game at the American Airlines Center.
But the second half of the first period saw Dallas rope the puck inside the offensive zone for long stretches, despite not earning a power play. The Wild had only two on-target shots and one wide shot in the final eight minutes of the period while the Stars forced nine saves and took another seven shots that missed the cage or were blocked.
The Stars weren’t able to fully take advantage of the Wild’s poor defending until the second period. But once they opened the floodgate, they couldn’t be stopped. Another five minutes passed before Jani Hakanpää scored the third goal. Receiving the puck on the right wing in a three-on-two situation, Jason Robertson slowed up and hit a trailing Roope Hintz. Hintz lined up a wrister and fired, which Hakanpää deflected in.
The Wild didn’t give up in a feisty third period, which was highlighted by a couple of skirmishes, but Oettinger stood tall to finish with 39 saves.Benn’s scoring has been down in recent seasons, averaging 16 goals over the last three seasons. Minus the 2012-13 lockout season, Benn had never scored less than 22 goals in a season over the first decade of his career.
