Three strong candidates are vying to replace longtime Dallas ISD trustee Edwin Flores representing a broad part of the city’s northwest.
Lance Currie, Maureen Milligan and Chris Roberts are all well-informed, civically engaged candidates who are running for the right reason: to help DISD continue on an upward trajectory while elevating more students through a variety of programs.
Both Currie and Milligan are firm supporters, for example, of the Teacher Excellence Initiative, a pay-incentive program that has proved it is helping DISD attract and keep great teachers. We are less certain that we agree with Milligan’s focus on resources for neighborhood schools. While she sounds support for DISD’s choice school program, we worry that her concern that neighborhood schools are being short-changed could lead to less attention on DISD’s excellent choice program. We believe the choice program has helped DISD break a cycle that saw the middle class largely abandon the district.Currie thinks the district is getting the balance right, and we agree.
