It doesn’t secure season openers.
Yates notched two defensive touchdowns in a promising start, but a drained and depleted offense dropped the ball three times in the third, and Dallas Carter turned all three fumbles into touchdowns en route to a 46-26 victory in a big-city showdown between two inner-city schools on Saturday night at Delmar Stadium.
“We did what we’re supposed to do in the first half,” first-year Yates coach Rafael Thomas said. “We had guys flying around … and we executed. “Then we came back in the second half and got bit by the injury bug, we started cramping – and that’s my fault. We’re not in the shape we need to be in and they capitalized. They found our weak spot and attacked.”Carter won the first two reunion games, 26-20 and 15-6, before the series was disrupted by the pandemic.Quarterback/cornerback Jaquan Brandon supplied a show-stopping 74-yard pick-six and two touchdowns on offense in the quarter, leading the Lions to a 26-13 halftime lead.
