Author Ben Fountain of Dallas has been named the winner of the 2024 Joyce Carol Oates Prize. Fountain is the author of "Devil Makes Three" and "Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk."has been named the recipient of this year’s Joyce Carol Oates Prize of $50,000, awarded by the New Literary Project to a mid-career author of fiction.He is the eighth recipient of the annual prize, after previously being a finalist in 2018.
As part of the award, Fountain will have a brief fall residency in the San Francisco Bay Area, teaching and speaking at the University of California, Berkeley and Saint Mary’s College of California.“Honored, elated, grateful, I’m feeling all of these emotions on being awarded the 2024 Joyce Carol Oates Prize,” Fountain said in a news release.Fountain will take part in a live virtual conversation with Joyce Carol Oates, a prolific author and the award’s namesake, on May 23 at 6 p.m. Dallas time.
