A coalition composed of unions, Indigenous groups, environmentalists and celebrities is calling on Canada to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 as part of a proposed Pact for a Green New Deal. The group, which also includes scientists, health professionals, students and artists, has denounced what it called the inertia of governments at all levels in taking tougher measures to fight climate change.
On Wednesday, Svend Robinson, the federal NDP candidate for Burnaby North-Seymour, said the Green win in Nanaimo-Ladysmith was a wake-up call for the NDP, and called on the federal party to take a tougher stance in opposing oil and gas infrastructure. He also said the NDP should champion the Pact for a Green New Deal.
