The motion failed, with 231 MPs voting against and 131 voting for. Willie Madisha of the Congress of the People was the only one who abstained. The parties that supported the DA in the motion included the EFF, UDM, African Transformation Movement and Freedom Front Plus, while Cope abstained.Earlier, before the voting took place, opposition parties who supported the motion took turns in criticising, calling ministers “a bunch of crooks” and “thieves”, and referring to Cabinet as a “poverty cabinet”.
ANC deputy chief whip, Doris Dlakude, said that, in the DA, the ANC was dealing with an “enemy” whose intention was to “attack the structures and systems of our democracy”.In a first for Parliament, there were two motions that the house was dealing with on Wednesday – another was a motion of no confidence in Ramaphosa, which had been brought by the ATM.
On Monday, the Cape Town High Court struck off the roll an application that the ATM had brought in front of the court to hold the motion of no confidence in a secret ballot.
