The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling for urgent intervention from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) to alleviate severe overcrowding at Cosmo City Junior Primary School. The DA's oversight visit revealed a staggering number of students per classroom, a lack of sufficient furniture and deteriorating restrooms.
Overcrowding continues to plague schools across the nation, and the Democratic Alliance (DA) is demanding swift action from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) to alleviate the crisis at Cosmo City Junior Primary School. During an oversight visit earlier this week, the DA uncovered the severe overcrowding plaguing the school. One Grade 1 classroom was found to hold a staggering 92 students, while a Grade 2 class contained 87 pupils.
The DA expressed deep concern, stating that this overcrowded learning environment deprives children of a nurturing space essential for their growth and development. The school's enrollment currently stands at 2,793 pupils, exceeding its intended capacity of 1,024 by a considerable margin. This issue came to light during the DA's inspections of various schools in the Cosmo City area. The DA revealed that the school is grappling with a severe shortage of furniture. Many students lack desks, and some teachers are forced to accommodate three students at desks designed for two. Adding to the challenges, inadequate infrastructure and a lack of human resources exacerbate the situation. Despite having almost 3,000 students, the school only possesses 24 restrooms, many of which are in a state of disrepair. Furthermore, the DA highlighted that the acting principal is overburdened with an excessive number of students, lacking adequate support due to the absence of a permanent principal. The DA Gauteng plans to question Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, regarding the establishment of 4,000 satellite schools and their precise locations. They urged the department to pursue a permanent solution to address the school's inadequate facilities, ensuring students have access to safe and conducive learning environments. The DA emphasized its demand for the GDE to take immediate action by providing additional mobile classrooms and essential resources to tackle the overcrowding crisis affecting schools throughout the province. The DA reiterated its commitment to fighting for the rights of children and ensuring they receive quality education and a suitable learning environment in all schools across the province
