The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the ongoing water supply crisis in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni. The party has called for an emergency declaration due to persistent water outages and critically low reservoir levels. The DA has outlined a three-point plan to address the crisis, including establishing independent power suppliers, upgrading infrastructure, and creating a rapid response maintenance unit.

The City of Johannesburg continues to grapple with persistent water outages that can last for hours or even days at a time. This ongoing crisis has prompted the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng to call for an emergency declaration . In a statement released on February 12, 2025, the DA expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation, noting that residents have already endured prolonged periods without water.

Adding to the urgency, Joburg Water announced a nine-hour water outage scheduled for February 13, 2025, affecting over 40 suburbs across the city. This shutdown will leave residents in various extensions, including Halfway Gardens Extensions, Erand Gardens Extension, and Halfway House Extensions, without water. The DA's statement highlighted the severity of the crisis, pointing to a system status report published by Joburg Water on February 11, 2025, which revealed critically low reservoir levels across multiple regions. The party expressed fears that residents would once again face days and weeks without water access. Nico de Jager MPL, the DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Infrastructure Development, emphasized the need for decisive action and comprehensive contingency planning. He criticized the constant blame-shifting between Rand Water, Eskom, and City Power, urging for a solution-oriented approach.De Jager outlined three key initiatives the DA would implement if in government. Firstly, establishing independent power suppliers at all major pump stations using solar and battery systems to ensure reliable electricity supply. Secondly, upgrading the aging infrastructure by incorporating smart pressure management systems to optimize water distribution and reduce losses. Lastly, creating a rapid response maintenance unit specifically trained to handle water infrastructure emergencies, allowing for swift and effective repairs. The DA has urged the Gauteng Provincial Government to acknowledge this crisis as an emergency and take immediate measures to protect the fundamental human right to water access. They called for a comprehensive overhaul of water infrastructure management and maintenance practices to prevent future crises.
