D.C. says schools and day cares can lift mask mandate; DCPS will consider it
But it's not immediately clear what that will mean for the majority of children in the city.
D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Lewis D. Ferebee said that masks are still required at its schools and that he would be speaking with the unions and community about the new health guidance.with the Washington Teachers’ Union on how to reopen schools in the fall that states that masks are required inside school buildings.
A spokesman for KIPP DC, the city’s largest charter network, said it was still reviewing the guidance and would be asking its staff and families if they want the mandate to remain. The new guidance also removes any recommendations for physical distancing in classrooms and shortens the time of quarantining to five days with a negative coronavirus test. The latest guidance also gives schools more flexibility to decide what symptoms should require students to remain home. Schools will no longer need to report every positive case to the health department, just when a school reaches a certain threshold of cases.
