When you came in we rejoiced thinking that things will get better. Umbutho wethu iANC, soze siwuyeka,” the man says, competing with growing excitement coming from the large crowd gathered outside hoping for a glimpse of the president.

There is an awkward wait as the search for the plastic bag with shirts before it is brought to the president who personally hands them out. The woman who Ramaphosa has come to see wastes no time explaining the difficulty in her living conditions.
