Although the incurable blood cancer is most common in older adults, local paramedic Ashley Dieks was diagnosed at age 36
Sudbury’s cycling community turned out on a chilly late-spring morning on Sunday for Bike to Beat Myeloma in support of a local paramedic who was diagnosed with the incurable blood cancer in 2022.
Ashley Dieks, a paramedic with Manitoulin Sudbury Emergency Medical Services, said she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma on May 18 of last year. “Plasma is what gives you your antibodies to fight off infection, and it kind of overtakes your bone marrow. That's why a lot of people who have myeloma have a lot of bone issues as well, because it creates a lot of holes in our bones, and then we have risk of fractures.”
Dieks was part of a six-person team to organize the Bike to Beat Myeloma ride, and she was thrilled with the turnout.“Years ago, I did the paramedic ride from Toronto to Ottawa,” she said. “That's kind of how I was introduced to cycling. I took a little bit of a hiatus. Then when I got with my recent partner, he was always into cycling, and then I kind of took that on again.
