A recent cyberattack has severely disrupted the operations of the South African Weather Services (SAWS), compromising its email system, website, and critical weather information dissemination channels. SAWS is working with ICT service providers to restore its systems and has urged the public to rely on social media platforms for weather updates during this period of disruption.
The South African Weather Services ( SAWS ) has been grappling with a significant cyberattack that has severely disrupted its operations. On Sunday evening, January 26th, SAWS experienced a criminal security breach, causing the collapse of its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems. This incident has impacted a wide range of crucial services, including email communication, website accessibility, and the dissemination of critical weather information.
SAWS Senior Manager, Oupa Sigalwe, confirmed the extent of the damage, stating that the email system and website, which serve as the primary hubs for weather-related information, have been rendered unusable. He emphasized, however, that SAWS has swiftly implemented alternative channels to ensure the public continues to receive essential weather updates. These alternative channels include social media platforms. Sigalwe further disclosed that ICT service providers have been on site since the attack, diligently working to investigate the breach and explore both immediate and long-term solutions for restoring the compromised systems. SAWS is also cooperating with relevant authorities by reporting the criminal act and providing all necessary information to facilitate a thorough investigation. In the meantime, the public is strongly advised to rely on SAWS's social media channels for the most up-to-date and reliable weather information
