The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded a $700,000 grant to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office to help combat gun violence, the prosecutor’s office announced Wednesday.

Although the number could change, Cuyahoga County ended 2021 with a total of 241 homicides. The number includes 170 homicides in Cleveland, and 71 in the county's suburbs. CLEVELAND, Ohio –

“Gun violence has been vexing this county and crippling the safety of residents and visitors of our community,” Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley said in a statement. “This grant will significantly help us and our law enforcement agency partners in identifying and reducing violent firearm crime.” The grant comes after another year of deadly violence in Cuyahoga County, mostly involving the use of firearms.with 170 homicides, which was down from 193 homicides in 2020 but still the city’s second-worst total in the past 30 years.
