The family of a man whose death marked the first in an historic string of inmate deaths at the Cuyahoga County Jail settled its lawsuit with the county and MetroHealth for $550,000.
Johnson family attorney Thomas Robenalt declined comment. The county will pay $350,000 and a joint county-MetroHealth insurance policy will pay $200,000, officials said.
The deaths also sparked an Ohio Attorney General’s Office criminal investigation that ended with prison time for the then-jail administrator, Ken Mills, warden Eric Ivey and several corrections officers. Johnson was booked into the jail on June 20, 2018, on accusations that he broke into a storage unit. He was initially released on bond, but failed to show up at a court hearing and was arrested.
