CONTRIBUTED/LAURA BROPHYFLORENCE — When Jeannie Fraser saw a picture of marine life washed up on the beach along a Cape Breton shoreline, she knew she had to take a look for herself.
“I decided to go over and get some pictures and document it,” said Fraser, a part-time volunteer with the Marine Animal Society . “They do reside in the waters around Atlantic Canada, but you rarely see them,” said Fraser. “They’re not one of those whales you see when you’re out whale watching, but when you do see them it’s usually because they’re close to shore, which means they’re in distress.”
The whale, which was measured at about 20 feet, was removed from the shoreline on Wednesday afternoon. The cause of death was not confirmed at publication time.
