Meet Bruce Wang, a Chinese cowboy in Texas who joined a diverse, but evolving tradition

In truth, Wang said, modern cowboys have to reckon with not just unruly steers, but the almighty forces of global trade and technology. Last August, Wang traded his stirrups for a graduate student office at Texas Tech, researching the impact of technology. His cowboy years had helped him appreciate how farmers and cattle ranchers in regions all around the world – from Inner Mongolia and Tibet in China to the grasslands of North Africa – face similar problems adapting in the face of rising prices and technological shifts, he said.
