BREAKING: CUPE calls off strike, schools to reopen Monday as tentative deal reached with province
After a weekend of last-ditch negotiations, CUPE and the government have hammered out a tentative agreement, averting a strike and meaning that hundreds of thousands of children in boards across the province will return to school, in person.
The news came around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, after the two sides had promised to let parents know by 5 p.m. whether the 55,000 school support staff would hit the picket lines. “The will be bringing a tentative agreement to the membership,” the Canadian Union of Public Employees school boards’ unit said in a statement.
“There will be no job action . Our members will be reporting to schools to continue supporting the students that we are proud to work with.” Mediated talks were held at a downtown Toronto hotel in the hopes of landing a deal on the weekend before the custodians, early childhood educators, educational assistants and others in many school boards were set to walk off the job.
