New York is enlisting inmates to produce 100,000 gallons of hand sanitizer a week.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo alleged that third-party retailers on Amazon AMZN, -3.75% and eBay EBAY, -3.35% are inflating their prices due to demand and, said this week that he was enlisting the help of inmates to produce 100,000 gallons of hand sanitizer per week.
Other lawmakers criticized the move. Rep. Ayanna Pressley wrote on Twitter TWTR, -8.77% “Considering that many incarcerated men & women are subjected to inhumane conditions, including no hand soap, & hand sanitizer is banned in most prisons, this is especially demeaning, ironic & exploitative.” Purell’s parent company, GOJO Industries, meanwhile, expressed concerns over the state-produced hand-sanitizer. “We assume the State of New York and the company it has identified to produce hand sanitizer in its prisons... and will do what is needed to produce safe and effective product in a way that is fully compliant with all regulations and standards,” said Samantha Williams, corporate communications senior director at GOJO.
Corcraft workers earn an average wage of 65 cents an hour, according to a Gothamist story published in August.
