The Mother City club’s chairman John Comitis and head coach Eric Tinkler have reiterated the importance of challenging for trophies this season, starting with the MTN8. The Citizens have had a perfect start for their DStv Premiership campaign, having won both their matches so far, against Polokwane City and Moroka Swallows respectively. The Cape side’s captain Thamsanqa Mkhize has spoken about the importance of competing for trophies.

“The reason why I left Maritzburg is because I wanted to play for a club that is challenging for honours. I know that I won’t be playing football for the rest of my life and I was fortunate enough when I joined Cape Town City. I joined a club whereby the ambition of the club is to win silverware. I was lucky enough that we managed to win in our first season and I know how it feels to play for a club that wins things,” he said, speaking to the media.

“I will also agree with the boss that for the past two years as much as the club has been finishing in respectable positions, but for us as the players, it doesn’t taste good knowing that we didn’t deliver any silverware and also didn’t put something in our pockets. "I’m glad that they emphasise especially on the players because when you put your plan and your players know and understand what you want from them it’s guaranteed. Even if it doesn’t happen, at least if they try, because the most important thing for me personally is to always challenge to win something which will be good for the team and also good for the growth of the player because you also want to go and represent the national team.

"The up and coming young players are getting opportunities now to go and play overseas. So, I believe this season if we can make sure that we go all out, whatever honours are there, we challenge for those honours, eventually something will happen,” Mkhize added.
