Federal Green leader Elizabeth May said she was “shocked” by the approval, warning that the project will have devastating impacts on local wildlife.Canada’s environment regulator has approved a new container terminal off the coast of Greater Vancouver despite concerns about the impact the project will have on the ecologically sensitive region.
The Impact Assessment Agency on Thursday gave the O.K. to the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 but also issued over 370 legally binding conditions for the project, including protections for local fish habitat and noise monitoring requirements to ease the impact on killer whales. Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said additional container capacity will ease bottlenecks at the increasingly busy port and the mitigation efforts will protect local animal life and the environment.
