According to data obtained by the Ottawa Health Coalition, most operating rooms are only used on weekdays and during daytime hours.
“It is clear that there is capacity in our existing hospitals,” said Ottawa Health Coalition chair Ed Cashman.
There are signs that some of the underused operating space could soon be used to help reduce cancer and other surgical backlogs in the region.Article content Hannah Jensen, a spokesperson for Health Minister Sylvia Jones noted that the provincial government has invested almost a billion dollars in hospitals across the province through its surgical recovery fund to reduce the surgical backlog since the beginning of the pandemic.Article content
“We don’t need infrastructure. There is infrastructure sitting empty in every surgical hospital in Ontario. All they need is money to run them,” said the Sudbury-area MPP.Article content Private operators are paid at a higher rate for day surgeries than hospitals generally get. The province is poised to expand private standalone surgical clinics for other procedures, including hip and knee replacements.
