Critics pan 'secretive' deal by Calgary police chief to rehire deputy yyc
Last November, Calgary Police Service Chief Mark Neufeld agreed to provide a new contract for Deputy Chief Paul Cook, a post that will pay him nearly $250,000.
But the move has rankled members of the service who see it as undue privilege at a time when the force is understaffed and “officers are trying to negotiate a contract,” said Calgary Police Association president John Orr.Article content In a statement, the city said the CPS “may act outside of The City’s employment policy when deemed necessary by the Chief of Police,” adding the city would support the police commission’s efforts in reviewing the process.
“You’d think there’d be better communication between the chief and the commission . . . it seems to be lacking in transparency.” But a CPS spokeswoman said the arrangement simply provided a contract for Cook, who didn’t previously have one. Because there’s been no lump sum paid to Cook, it was a cost-neutral decision and one done with legal guidance, said Poole, who called rehiring a routine CPS practice.
