Prep football: Recently, Gov. Abbott has spent more time addressing skeptics who can...

Greg Abbott’s push for a school choice program that would allow parents to use tax dollars to send their kids to private schools.
“As it concerns high school football, listen, I went to an Odessa Permian-Midland football game and I can tell you football is alive and well in the Permian Basin as well as across the entire state of Texas,” Abbott said. Of the top 10 high school football recruits ranked in Florida by Rivals, six went to private schools in that state where private schools consistently win state championships over public schools. About half of the top 50 Florida players are private school students.comes from a private school.
Abbott said there’s a better shot this year because of what parents went through during the pandemic. He said lots of families trying to help their children learn from home saw a liberal bias in the public school curriculum they didn’t like and want more choices. Critics say barriers will still be in place for lower-income families who won’t be able to afford tuition at Cypress Christian or at other private schools in the state, where tuition costs are generally over the $8,000 parents might get from the state. The average private school tuition in Houston last year was $23,644, according to Houston-based General Academics consulting company.
He needs both the state Senate and House to pass identical bills. While the legislation has momentum in the Senate, it’s in trouble in the Texas House where the issue has traditionally been opposed by a coalition of Democrats and rural Republicans that worry the plan, despite Abbott’s assurances, will mean less money for public schools for the kids who remain in the school while others go to private schools.
