The majority of the members of the group are representatives from the Western Trust and Department of Health

A group campaigning for the reinstatement of emergency general surgery at the South West Acute Hospital have questioned the composition of a group set up to safeguard the future of the hospital.

16 of those included in the group represent either the Trust or the Department, while one of the independent health advisors listed on the group is Professor Mark Taylor, former head of the Royal College of Surgeons, who had been vocal in his support of the decision to suspend general surgery at the Enniskillen hospital last year.

“We are not surprised - as they clearly did not want to hear the opinion expressed by 30,268 people who fully realise that the problems that SWAH faces are management created. Despite the criticism, Western Trust chief executive Neil Guckian says the establishment of the group is ‘an important step’ forward for the future of the SWAH.

“The establishment of the group has been welcomed by local elected representatives and it will operate as a collaborative grouping of senior influencers and stakeholders, whose shared purpose is to support the long term sustainability and development of SWAH as an acute hospital.
