She says that the group was the perfect combination to explore what she wanted to do within the most universal musical idiom she knows: Jazz. She has certainly proven that the gaita can hold its own in that context, as albums such as 2013’s Migrations and 2015’s Latina prove. Originally, she gained her chops learning by ear, going from village to village to “find the oldest piper there, record them and learn the parts.” Pato also pursued academic musical education and holds a MA in music theory and chamber music from the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu , an MFA in computer music from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a doctorate of musical arts in collaborative piano from the Rutgers University Mason Gross school of the arts.
The album Latina: The Latina 6/8 Suite explores the dancing rhythm and tempo of 6/8 that appears in everything from the Peruvian Festejo and Landó, Venezuelan Joropo, Italian Tarantella and others. Pato and her band approach the music on the studio recording with the meticulous polish of a symphony orchestra. Each of the musicians can hold their own with the bagpipes, yet the results are never flashy.
