Crisis in KZN as PSA highlights severe staff shortages and budget deficits in key departments
KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Francois Rodgers states he is committed to ensuring that all government funds are used efficiently to cater to the needs of the people of KZN
He referred to a recent incident where a teacher was brutally murdered in Ntuzuma, while a robbery at gunpoint occurred at a school in KwaMashu. Dudu Khumalo was gunned down in front of young pupils at Phikiswayo Primary School in Ntuzuma, northern Durban, last week by two men posing as parents. According to National Treasury, for the 2023/24 financial year, the department of health faces a projected budget deficit of R3.5 billion.
He also pointed out the department's lack of proper office facilities, which further hindered its ability to provide effective services. "We appeal to these departments to cease wasting money on fruitless events, litigation, and arbitration, which drain essential resources. We also request a meeting with the MEC and Premier to share our perspectives on budget issues and service delivery improvements.
