An orca whale calf is trapped in a lagoon on the northwestern side of Vancouver Island and crews are racing the clock to free her.

Crews are working to see if the young whale will take prey placed in the lagoon as a sandbar blocks exit and entry to the lagoon even at moderate high tides, according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Ehattseaht First Nation.

DFO also said the calf's matriline—or family—was spotted in a nearby sound Sunday and appears to be heading toward the lagoon, with networks of people trying to keep tabs on the pod's location. Although members of the Nuchatlaht and Ehattseaht First Nations attempted to keep the whales cool and afloat until Canadian wildlife officials could arrive, DFO said, the older whale ultimately died.
