A woman from Coahuila, Mexico, accused of being drunk when she drove a 2018 Mercedes-Benz head-on into Gabriel Gallegos’ car is charged with intoxication manslaughter. Free on bail, she was able to complete her bachelor of business administration degree in August at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
It doesn’t mention the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, but that’s the target of the Gallegos family’s criticism. “This is a complicated case that both our office and the defense have spent an extraordinary amount of time investigating,” District Attorney Joe D. Gonzales said in a statement. “Justice for the Gallegos family has always been a priority for our office. We expect all of the evidence and witnesses to be ready when the case is called for trial.”
Gabriel Gallegos — who worked as a trainer for Sunrun, a solar panel company — was killed shortly after 2 a.m. May 23, 2020, as he was returning to a friend’s home from a quick trip to get breakfast tacos. A witness driving east on Loop 1604 told police he saw a pair of headlights coming toward him and changed lanes. The other driver passed him at a “high rate of speed,” and he took the next exit to turn around while calling 911, the SAPD report states. Arriving at the crash site, the witness recognized one of the vehicles as the one that almost hit him, the report said.
“When all is said and done, I believe everyone — including the Gallegos family — will understand that in this case, it was worth the wait.”
