The defender has turned to the fixture cards as he pinpoints a dream return to the Tynecastle first-team picture.

Craig Halkett has had a peek into the fixture card horizon which he’s praying will provide a taste of European football for Hearts beyond their Europa Conference League play-off round.

"Match day four is on the second or third of November. It’s hypothetical but all going well and if I manage to get a few games before that and if the boys manage to get through then that would be a realistic target. It’s difficult as there’s nothing I can do at the moment to help us get there other than support them as best I can.

“These nights are a tonic for me as I’m in a tough position at the moment, not being able to help the team and having to support them from the sidelines. I’ve always said I’ll try to get involved as much as I can, whether that’s giving out bits of advice or celebrating with the team, I want to do everything I can just to feel part of it.

“I had been looking forward to Europe last season after all of the hard work we’d done to get there the season before by finishing third and then I had the injuries in the two games that I managed to play. I played 22 minutes away against FC Zurich and 22 minutes against RFS in Riga before having to come off.

What awaits Hearts tomorrow is a PAOK outfit which has been around the European football block countless times and claimed some huge scalps along the way and Halkett is under no illusion at the size of the task. He said: “We know PAOK are a good side, if we go by their last results in Europe then they dug out a draw away against Hajduk Split before winning comfortably at home then it tells you about their quality.
