Ten people were shot in the Short North area early Sunday morning, including two victims who were only 16 years old.
Columbus Police Assistant Chief LaShanna Potts confirmed that update to ABC 6 on Tuesday, adding that investigators have drawn that conclusion because four different types of shell casings were found at the scene.Ten people were injured in the shooting that took place in the 1100 block of North High Street at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday as bars were closing in the busy nightlife district.
A man who police said admitted he was the getaway driver is the only person in custody in the case. Deangelo Fuller turned himself in Sunday evening andthat the city had seen significant drops in violent crime, particularly with regard to homicides and felonious assaults. But as the summer drew near, crime started to rise around Columbus, and Potts said as much during a news conference Monday.
"It is a gun problem," she said, adding that families and parents need to keep a closer eye on their children. That there were 16-year-olds hanging out in the Short North at 2:30 a.m. was troubling, Potts said. "We're asking judges and the judicial system to really focus on crimes involving guns and the young people that are committing them," Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said Tuesday. "Often times when you see crimes committed with guns, they get more and more aggressive and more and more violent, and ultimately deadly. We need to treat gun crimes differently."
