Rabbits are as low on the food chain as an animal can get, so when there are babies that need food and protection, a mama rabbit leaves them on their own until she knows it’s safe.“Cottontail rabbits will dig a little compression in the ground, not very deep, sometimes only a couple inches deep, then they’ll pull fur from their underbelly and line this compression with their nice, soft fur and they’ll put the babies in this little fur-lined compression,” Karvonen explained.
