The Dallas Cowboys hold training camp in California, sticking some of their players with six figure tax bills.
seems to have subsided for the moment, so it is time once again for America’s collective focus to return to the NFL. Training camp for most teams starts this week, so millions of armchair “owners” will be reading the daily reports from around the league trying to find the dark horse who will take their fantasy team to the top.
At first glance, this seems like a pretty good idea for the Cowboys: move the players far from any distractions that could divert focus away from football and preparing for the upcoming season. Dallas is hot and humid in late July and August, while Southern California is perpetually dry and pleasant. There are a handful of teams training nearby to scrimmage against. But dig deeper and you will see that the players literally pay a price for training in better weather far from their families.
If you exclude off days during training camp, the Cowboys will spend 20 days working in California during 2019, 16 of which are training camp days. Thus, 9.3% of returning players’ income is taxed in California solely on training camp days. $177,000 is a steep price to pay to practice in nice weather and to skip out on household chores for a few weeks.
