Rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker was stopped short on the fourth-quarter play that McCarthy chose over kicking a field goal.
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy reacts after a review on tight end Luke Schoonmaker’s fourth quarter touchdown that came up short of the goal line against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Nov. 5, 2023.PHILADELPHIA — It would be a bit unfair to second-guess an aggressive fourth-and-short decision that Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy made Sunday
in the fourth quarter of a game that saw earlier instances of fourth-down aggression lead to scoring drives.Trailing 28-17, the Cowboys could have kicked a field goal on fourth-and-goal, needing about 1 1/2 yards with about 10 minutes remaining. A field goal would have made it a one-possession game. Instead,McCarthy said the decision to go for a touchdown that drive was made before the series began, calling it part of a “process” the team has.
“That’s echoed before the series, during the series,” McCarthy said. “We have individuals that are responsible for that. But yeah, we had planned on going for the touchdown before the series was called based on the time.”Michael Gehlken .
