The Cowboys head coach referenced his own growth when discussing Kellen Moore's during their shared time in Dallas.
He praised Moore and his development as a play-caller, specifically how Moore in 2022 showed a greater commitment toward the run game.In 2011, McCarthy coached the Green Bay Packers.“But we killed our defense,” McCarthy said of a unit that finished last in yards allowed. “We didn’t have enough pass rush. “I think when you’re a coordinator, you know but you’re in charge of the offense. Being a head coach and being a play caller, you’re a little more in tune with . I don’t desire to be the No. 1 offense in the league. I want to be the No. 1 team in the league with the number of wins and a championship.
And if we’ve got to give up some production and take care of the ball a little better to get that, then that’s what we’ll do because we have a really good defense.”He spent 13 seasons as the Packers coach. He had one defense that finished top-five in points allowed. In that 2010 season, the Packers won the Super Bowl.
“The facts are in the pudding,” McCarthy said. “It’s just the reality of this league. …I want my team to look like that, and I felt the 2022 team looked that way. In 2021, we had moments. We were up and down getting to that, but it’s hard to run the ball 32 times a game. I mean, you guys are getting on a play-caller’s ass. The people are booing. You’ve got to be comfortable getting booed at Lambeau Field. That’s just the way this thing goes.
“You know, play calling is not a popularity contest. And I think [Moore] did a hell of a job. Look at the way he called games his first year and the way he called last year. I think he evolved. He’s a better coach today than he was when I met him three years ago. … Run game is not sexy. It doesn’t get you the headlines and all that, but man, you got to win the time of possession. Look at what Philadelphia did this year— scoring on the first drive of the game and the way they ran the ball.
