In final season of six\u002Dyear, US$33\u002Dmillion contract, resurgent winger is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Drouin has recovered and has five assists in the last two games and 12 assists in his last 12 games. Despite missing 23 games this season, he ranks third on the Canadiens in assists with 17, trailing Nick Suzuki and Kirby Dach .
A lot has happened to Drouin since he joined the Canadiens and most of it has been bad. Apart from the injuries — including surgeries on both his wrists — Drouin missed the last 12 games of the 2020-21 regular season and the Canadiens’ entire run to the Stanley Cup final after leaving the team to deal with anxiety and insomnia issues that, at times, would see him go three nights in a row without sleep.
“It’s harder on my family than me,” Drouin said about his uncertain future. “This is new for me. Before, it would have been a little less something to think about, but now I have a son and a family. It’s something that’s in the back of our minds, for sure. But like I told them, we don’t control that stuff. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t.”
“Some people might say different, but I’ve loved my time here,” Drouin said. “There’s been ups and downs but, wherever you play, you’re going to have ups and downs with the city, with the fans, whatever it is. I’ve enjoyed my time here, especially this year. You can see a light at the end of the tunnel for this team and it’s definitely promising.”
