The COVID-19 pandemic fueled a sharp uptick in deaths related to chronic liver disease and cirrhosis among people with diabetes, largely owing to NAFLD and ALD, new data show. MedTwitter
The researchers used US national mortality data to estimate chronic liver disease–related mortality trends among individuals with diabetes before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before the pandemic, the quarterly mortality for chronic liver disease remained stable but then sharply increased during the pandemic .NAFLD and ALD mortality among individuals with diabetes was steadily increasing before the pandemic but showed a more rapid increase during the pandemic . ALD-related mortality in men was more than threefold higher than in women, while NAFLD-related mortality in women was more than twofold higher than in men.infection declined before the pandemic and remained stable during the pandemic.
COVID-19–related mortality among adults with chronic liver disease and diabetes also rose sharply during the pandemic ― from 0.4% in the first quarter of 2020 to 12.9% in the last quarter of 2020 ― with no considerable difference between men and women.Kim and colleagues say research is needed to better understand the direct and indirect influence of COVID-19 on coexisting chronic liver disease and diabetes.
