They do not “appear to be associated with greater disease severity or hospitalizations compared to the most recent subvariants,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the president's chief medical adviser, said during Tuesday’s briefing. “This is similar to what we saw with the omicron surge in the beginning of the year,” though the rate of increase is slower than before, said Dr. Robert Atmar, a professor of infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
