B.C. health officials will be rolling out a vaccination campaign for booster shots for millions of British Columbians age 12 and older in the fall, even as the province’sB.C. plans to offer booster shots to the general population starting September, following the recommendation of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization. The booster shots will likely be bivalent vaccines manufactured by Pfizer and Moderna pending regulatory approval by Health Canada.
Like previous campaigns, the booster campaign will be rolled out largely based on age and prioritize people who need it most. Current vaccines are not tailored to the dominant COVID-19 Omicron variant, while the bivalent vaccines — both mRNA vaccines — likely to be available in the fall are designed to be effective against the original strain as well as the Omicron strain.Article content
Lavoie said people still have individual roles to play to help curb transmission of COVID-19, including washing their hands, keeping their distance, and wearing masks, even though none of these are currently required in B.C.
